Thank you for your article - it is like a breath of fresh air in this polluted country! I am glad to hear someone speak out against the ridiculous laws that provide protection for sealers, but none for the seals themselves or for the people who protest their slaughter. It is my opinion that the Canadian harp and hooded seal hunt violates international law. As a party to the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), Canada obligated itself to “[c]onsider and undertake any ... action that may be required for the achievement of the purposes of this Convention …” Article 23 4(i). The goal of the CBD is to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss as decided by the Conference of the Parties in Decision VI/26. The spirit and the content of the Convention is concerned with the intrinsic value of biological diversity together with the moral and ethical aspects of its protection. The Canadian seal hunts are not only cruel, but also comprise a threat to global biodiversity, thus contradicting the 2010 goal as determined by the parties to the CBD.

The rate of biodiversity loss is increasing at an unprecedented pace. In order to meet the 2010 goal of halting biodiversity loss, parties must ensure that their national policies do not endanger biodiversity. This is something that Canada has failed to do. Reports show that the effects of climate change on the habitats of harp and hooded seals are causing a dramatic reduction in sea ice cover and, consequently, endangering harp and hooded seal populations. The 2007 quota of 250,000 seals and the 2008 quota of 275,000 seals as set by the government of Canada is unsustainable. The total amount of seals killed exceeds even this enormous quota. Many seals shot during these hunts escape beneath the ice where they die slowly and are never recovered. These seals are not counted in official kill statistics, making the actual kill level far higher than the level that is reported.

In order to fulfill its obligations under the CBD, Canada must bring an immediate halt to the seal hunt because it is cruel and threatens global biodiversity. Canada’s actions with respect to the seal hunt contradicts the 2010 goal of reducing biodiversity loss as agreed upon by the parties to the CBD. Canada must end the seal hunt to comply with its international legal obligations.

What a wonderful article! You have gone straight to the heart of the issue: the seal hunt is about two worlds colliding. The new world view will continue to capture more hearts and each year the opposition to the seal hunt will grow, although the government doesn't realize this yet. They still believe that by harrassing observers they can protect the hunt. I applaud Paul Watson for his courage, Farley Mowat for acting on his beliefs, and Silver Donald Cameron for his eloquence and perception.

Fantastic article! The tide is indeed turning and the biocentric perspective of deep ecology - that all life has intrinsic value - is gaining ground. The baby harp-seal slaughter is big news in Europe, where the media covers it extensively every spring, replete with video footage. The media in Canada, on the other hand, are almost silent and continue to ignore the pleas of me and my colleagues to broadcast the truth about the massacre... I have been a long time admirer of Paul Watson since first learning of his courageous activism back in the '80's fighting to protect Whales. He is one man who has stood defiant against the "Armada of Death" on the seas and oceans across the planet.

I'm not religious, but I'm pretty sure the commandment doesn't say "Thou shall not kill humans" I hope there is a special place in hell for the killers and abusers of our animal friends. You got it straight as an arrow, Silver Donald. It was a brave and principled stance, not to mention a risky for someone who lives and writes in the Maritimes.

Someone had to say what needs to be said and our politicians are too corrupt and spineless to admit. Paul Watson and his colleagues are visionary leaders not terrorists. And the emperor Loyola Hearn has no clothes - not even a seal coat.

One of the best articles I've seen in the Canadian media in years! It's long overdue that the government rhetoric be exposed for what it truly is - lying, manipulative garbage.

I wish for more Paul Watson's in this world. If this were the case, can you only imagine the world of peace and harmony we would be privy to. A world where co-existing and respect for all living beings - regardless of species - would be the norm and no longer vilianized by the likes of politicians and those who choose to remain in the dark ages of violence and dominion.
